Gaya is the seat of ancestor worship. Thousands of Hindus from all over the world visit Gaya every year and offer oblations to their forefathers believing that by performing Gaya sraddha they were helping their ancestors to attain salvation. The special fortnight for such adoration comes in the months of September and October. The period is identitied as Pitripaksha mela.
