Sir William Jones, scholar extraordinary, a polyglot with intimate acquaintance with 28 language including Sanskrit, whose range of interests embraced subjects from music to mathematics was the pioneer who opened the vast riches of India's culture and literature to the West, Coming to India as a Smriti, Kalidasa's Sakuntalam, Jayadeva's Gitagovindam and Hitopadesam.
