The three parts of this book were originally published in Polish as three separate volumes, by the School and Pedagogical Publishers, then PZWS, in the years 1961-1963. A balanced combination of sound scholarship and straightforward explication, the textbook is now offered in translation and with some supplements and minor revisions, to the new generation of students. The translator's insertions come mainly in Part One, where the section of English consonants has been expanded to better meet the syllabus of practical phonetics in the English Department at the Polish Universities

Yet this book is not, in its design, a university text-book. It may be of use to intermediate and advanced learners of the English language or to teachers who seek who wish to improve their pronunciation, a revision of the rudiments of English phonetics as well as inspiration on how to handle their students' pronunciation errors. It may also serve as an introduction to a more systematic study of English phonetics. before the student turns to such books as An Outline of English Phonetics Daniel Jones or An Introduction to the Pronunciation of English by A. C. Gimson. 

Unlike those books, however. the late Professor Reszkiewicz's work to the specific problems encountered by the native speaker of polish lenses are made to Polish sound a: for example, the English vowels are described not in relation to the Internationa phonetics association's cardinal vowels but to vowels of polish, a standard immediately accessible to the readers..
