The
purpose of this book is to examine the claims that have been made for the
importance of English in development, to point out where these claims do not
appear to be justified, to consider whether the pursuit of English in the name
of development carries with it any dangers, to identify those areas in which
English really does appear to have a useful role to play and to formulate
recommendations.
Some of the 15 chapters which follow this introductory chapter take a broad geographical sweep while others focus on particular countries. Fifteen countries are selected for detailed discussion, six in Asia (Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) and nine in Africa (Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia).
