The most ancient expressions of linguistic interest generally known to the Western world are recorded. As this book goes to press there is no readily available text that adequately provides this perspective. To my knowledge, only one of the recent linguistics texts published in this country does more than mention in passing the names of those scholars – others than Bloomfield – who first formulated and clarified the principles of struructuralism.
