Lady Ursa Hillington finds Hillington hall rather dull while her father is away on business. So she is amazed when her glamorous sister, Penelope, is unexpectedly announced at their country home, after an absence of three years. Ursa is even more surprised when, however frightening the Idea might be she is asked to impersonate Penelope.

But as she quickly discover, one impersonation soon leads to another and in no time she finds herself playing the leading role in an even more extraordinary charade, only now it's to help the handsome and dashing marquis of Charlwood.
