This book has a double purpose. The first part presents the history of Ancient India from pre-historic period to the time of Muslim invasion. The second is a full survey of ancient Indian culture with special reference to education, religion and philosophy, literature, and art.   

The understanding of history suffers when too little attention is paid to the cultural aspect, and  a study of the cultural of a period alone, when divorced from its historical background, gives an incomplete picture of a civilization.
