Gordon W. Prange was born in Pomeroy, Iowa, on July 16, 1910. He was educated at the University of Iowa and the University of Berlin. He taught history at the University of Maryland as an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor from 1937 until his death in May 1980. During World War II he served as an officer in the Naval Reserve, and during the occupation of Japan, from December 1945 until July 1951, he joined General Head-quarters, Far East Command, Tokyo, as a civilian. From October 1946 to June 1951 he was chief of General Douglas MacArthur's G-2 Historical Section, and from June through July 1951 he was acting director of the military history Section.
